End of Life Choices New York

End of Life Choices New York, through leadership, advocacy, education and counseling, seeks to expand choice at the end of life and improve the quality of care for New Yorkers, ensuring that their values and wishes are respected. We help patients and their loved ones face the end of life with calm facts and choices of action during a difficult time. We aggressively pursue legal reforms to improve pain care and palliative care. We engage in a variety of educational and advocacy efforts to ensure that advance directives and end of life wishes are honored. And, we are now engaged in a major effort to establish aid in dying in New York either through litigation or by legislation.

Judith Schwarz, RN, MSN, PhD

As a young ICU nurse, Judith remembers seeing many patients die without having their emotional and interpersonal needs met, due to the demands of the clinical environment. Her dissertation research focused on how nurses can better manage their relationships with dying patients, and help empower them with the information they need to make their own end-of-life decisions.
